Austin J. Slater, Jr. and Eleanor Slater
Dedicated to public service and educational excellence, Neale Chaney Slater, was a Cadet in the Maryland State Police and a College of Southern Maryland (CSM) student in the fire science program. Neale accomplished so much as an honors graduate of Leonard Hall Junior Naval Academy where he attained the rank of Battalion Commander. There he was awarded the Midshipman of the Year in addition to receiving the Military Excellence, Headmaster’s and Loyalty Awards. As a young leader in the Southern Maryland community committed to good works, Neale was a Firefighter II and Assistant Secretary/Treasurer with the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department, in addition to being a Certified Emergency Medical Technician for the Mechanicsville Volunteer Rescue Squad. Neale made an impact on his hometown and was an inspiration to so many. In 2006, in memory of their son, Joe and Ellie Slater established the Neale Chaney Slater Memorial Endowment Scholarship Fund.

In 2006, in memory of their son, Joe and Ellie Slater established the Neale Chaney Slater Memorial Endowment Scholarship Fund to provide financial assistance for tuition, books and fees for high school graduates of the Leonard Hall Junior Naval Academy attending CSM or current students majoring in criminal justice or fire science.
