Friends and Family of Bill Montgomery
During his 43-year career as a professor of Biological and Physical Sciences at the College of Southern Maryland (CSM), William “Bill” Montgomery touched the lives of countless students and colleagues. A native of La Plata, Maryland, Bill began his relationship with the college in 1961 as a student of Charles County Community College. He went on to earn both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from the University of Maryland College Park. In 1971, he returned to CSM as a professor after his position at Freedmen’s Hospital School of Nursing ended. Bill was well-regarded by his students and held in the highest esteem by his fellow CSM faculty and staff members, serving as Department Chair for 32 years.
For Bill, it was his students who inspired him, especially his adult students who had the added pressures of juggling families and work. “They come into the program and don’t know if they can compete academically with people who are younger and they think smarter than themselves; but they learn they can not only compete but often outperform other students. The motivation and determination these students display is very inspiring to me,” Bill has said. Outside of teaching, Bill had a wide variety of interests. He was an avid baseball fan and served as Treasurer of the Southern Prince George’s County Beagle Club.
Impact
The William “Bill” Montgomery Memorial Annual Scholarship was established in 2015 by his wife, Susan Montgomery, and CSM faculty and staff to honor his work and memory. This scholarship supports students who are enrolled in at least six credits and reside in Southern Maryland.
