The Walsh Family

Charles “Charlie” K. Walsh came to St. Mary’s County from Louisville, KY in 1959 to study at Sacred Heart Novitiate on the campus of what is now St. Mary’s Ryken High School. He then went on to Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Chemistry in 1965. Charlie received a Master in Art of Teaching Mathematics and Chemistry from the University of Notre Dame in 1969 and a Master of Arts in Education from George Washington University in 1975. He began what would become a fifty-year teaching career in 1965 at St. Mary’s Ryken High School teaching chemistry and mathematics. He then went on to teach mathematics at Leonard Hall Junior Naval Academy from 1971-1976, followed by St. Mary’s County Public Schools from 1976-2003. He came to the College of Southern Maryland in 2003 and taught chemistry and mathematics for more than twenty years. Professor Walsh was a beloved instructor at CSM and his legacy will live on in the lives of the countless students that he inspired over his fifty-year teaching career that spanned three to four generations of families.
