Friends and Family of Diane Kaufman Fredette
Manhattan Architect Diane Kaufman Fredette came to know Southern Maryland through her annual involvement with the College of Southern Maryland’s Women + Math. She immediately embraced the program to inspire young women. “She encouraged them. She gave them her full attention. She giggled with them. She was in the moment and helping them peer into their future. It was her goal to offer these young minds the confidence to pursue their dream, explore the infinite options and stretch themselves to meet the challenges ahead,” said CSM’s Karen Smith Hupp, who introduced her longtime friend and high school classmate to CSM’s annual program when it was launched.
A partner with Fredette Architects, PLLC, Diane was both a registered architect and a professor, roles that combined her values of excellence in architecture, advocacy for
lifelong learning and sustainability. More importantly, she was a mentor and friend.
Impact
To honor her long shadow of friendship and the legacy she leaves us to be mentors and role models with those around us, the Diane Kaufman Fredette Scholarship was established in 2017 by Karen Smith Hupp to support students pursuing degrees in a STEM-related field or communications, with a preference for underrepresented populations.
