Rotary Club of Leonardtown
The Leonardtown Rotary Club was chartered on July 1, 1986 with twenty-five members. In our 25 year history we have given more than $598,000 to local programs responding to community needs. In addition to the funds given to local needs, the individual members have given $20,000 support to the International Polio Plus Program to eradicate polio and the club has provided $12,000 to other international projects such as refurbished computers and a digital library in India as well as a safe drinking water project in Honduras.
Leonardtown Rotary is proud to be associated with St. May’s College Annual Governor’s Cup Yacht Race. Leonardtown Rotary also participates in Fire/Rescue Appreciation Day, the Farm Life Festival, and highway clean-up. The club markets the best seafood chowder in the Chesapeake region at the annual Oyster Festival.
And when it comes to young people in this community, this organization provides scholarships for four local high school graduates who receive $1000 a year while in college, and also provides $1,500 in grants for continuing education for two teachers. Additionally we sponsor a Fluoride Rinse program for third graders in St. Mary’s County public schools to help insure healthy teeth for children who may not have fluoride in their drinking water. Club members believe this assistance to St. Mary’s County students is an important cornerstone of our annual giving.
We have also proudly sponsored an Interact club at Leonardtown High School. This Interact club is now 13 years old, and is an extension of Rotary. Its members have the same dedication to community service and international understanding.
Impact
The Leonardtown Rotary Paddle for Heroes Scholarship was established in 2018 by the Leonardtown Rotary Club in support of students who are first responders or a dependent of a first responder and reside in St. Mary’s County.
In 2021, this fund was amended to now be called the Leonardtown Rotary Flags for Heroes Scholarship in support of their new event supporting our heroes. This scholarship will be awarded to veterans or their dependents (spouse or child) who reside in St. Mary’s County,
