Sondra Loveless
Sondra Loveless was well known for her ability to light up a room. Whether it was to the students of Sondra’s 14 years as Attendance Secretary at Northern High School (and a few extra years prior as a substitute) or to her extensive family, Sondra always told it like it was. It is because of her refreshing honesty and true interest in everyone’s success that she has made an impact on so many.
To her family, Sondra paid attention to the details, like silly lists on the refrigerator, or the names of rare Squishmallows. She remembered these details and brought them into light in the most creative way, at the best possible time. Christmas with “Nonna” was always an adventure. Sondra loved to adventure away from home as well, and spent many summers, weekends, and holidays traveling the United States in her camper with her husband and little pomeranian, Honey. Sometimes with other family members, sometimes on their own, Sondra was the navigator of the travelers, remembering the best exits on the interstate, the best spots at the campgrounds, and the best roundabout ways to get to the destination. To Sondra, it never was just about the destination, as joy could always be found in the journey. She loved to stop at every beautiful moment and capture it with a picture.
At school, Sondra made it a point to remember students names, parents, class schedules, and even some of their bad habits, they’d probably have preferred she forget. Many parents would walk in to pick up their students having no idea what class they were in, but Sondra knew without even having to research. There were many occasions where Sondra would lecture a student on the importance of arriving at school on time, some of which never did change. There were quite a few, though, that said, “Mrs. Loveless is the only reason I graduated.” Through her entire career at NHS and NMS as a substitute teacher and attendance secretary, Sondra had a profound effect on the students.
In 2022, almost out of the blue, Sondra was diagnosed with Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Cancer. Though she battled it quietly and bravely, Sondra still let her light shine through. Through many doctors visits, and hospital stays, Sondra again had a profound impact on her nurses and care teams. During her final battle at Johns Hopkins Hospital, all of Sondra’s nurses raved about her beautiful smile, strong will, and amazing personality. Even at the very end, Sondra was always kind and polite.
Impact
The Sondra Loveless Memorial Scholarship was created to continue giving back to “her kids”. During her nearly 18 years in tenure at Calvert County Public Schools, Sondra continually pushed the students to do their absolute best and continue strong with their education. This award supports students of Calvert County Public Schools in their efforts to pursue a secondary education.
